It appears that StarOffice 7 and the SFW binaries are what pushed the
release over 5 CDs. For now, all subsequent releases will be 6 software
CDs and an optional lang CD.
We are looking into how we can trim it down to so that there are less
mandatory CD's. An RFE has been filed.

This might be a kind of crazy idea and I am not sure if it is even
possible. But couldn't a public flash http server be setup? So
all that would be needed would be an initial install CD. Then
during then install the necessary packages can be downloaded from
the public flash server(s)? Is this feasible? If it is I'll be
happy to put in a RFE.
sounds totally feasible to me.

Yes, it's feasible. There's no reason to file an RFE, it's
something we're considering as evidenced by the link above.
One problem is that it's extra release-engineering work to produce
the flar's, yet doing so doesn't address upgrades (obviously quite
important to existing community users) unless we're also producing
differential archives (even more release-engineering work, and we
would obviously have limits on the combinations we'd product) or
providing other means of performing an upgrade without having to
download everything. Flash has some nice features and I'd like to
use it more, but I'm not going to get a lot of support for spending
on infrastructure that addresses only one piece of the lifecycle
without a plan to leverage it into the rest. We're not there yet.

This is probably an even crazier suggestion given the current state
of things, but would it help if you could recruit some of us
community members to help with release-engineering work or any of
this in general?
I suppose it's possible that some community assistance could be
provided to RE, but someone from that team would need to chime in.
Community participation in the install work is something I'd like more
of, which is why I posted the strategy document to begin with. The
first hurdle we have to get over is open-sourcing the rest of the
install consolidation. That's in progress, hoping to be done within a
couple of months.
