I recall a Star Trek episode ( STNG in fact ) in which the venerable Scotty
tells the engineer of the new Enterprise that star ship captains always
expect a miracle and they want it right away. Never tell a captain how
long it will _really_ take to do a job or they lose all respect for you.

At a customer site and inside most corporate america trenches today you
will find that the work ethic is fairly perverted. The IT manager will
never remember the time that you saved them money or time or when you
were in the server room for 36 hours straight because some sales wonk
needed all of his data restored from tapes going back 2 years. Or far
worse, you were stuck working on a Microsoft Exchange server migration
because the impossibly stupid grey haired management felt it was the best
way to go despite the fact that your existing email system has worked
flawlessly for seven years.

No Sir.

You pull off the kind of miracles that you describe and you will be
absolutely crucified the first time that you can't recover the data
from the lost floppy under the desk of some saleswonk because you
were awake for forty hours straight trying to get Microsoft support
to resurrect the Exchange server.

Real life experience is talking here.
