Is this behavior consistent everytime you run gcc, mysql, ..,? You need to
isolate the problem to a single process that is triggering this behavior. Some
of Brendan Gregg's DTrace scripts (http://users.tpg.com.au/bdgcvb/dtrace.html)
might help you in diagnosing the issue. Besides DTrace, you can monitor the
system state with simple tools like vmstat, mpstat, iostat, netstat. Also don't
forget to check the system logs (/var/adm/messages*) whenever you see some
unusual activity.
