I don't think the divide between regular Solaris and OpenSolaris that
you're suggesting in fact exists.

As far as regular Solaris is concerned, the OpenSolaris sources just
happen to be the next release under development.  For those inside
Sun, it's the same as it always has been in terms of transitioning
from one release to another -- except that we've invited the rest of
the world to look at and contribute to that source base.

So, for today, Solaris 10 (and older) are closed source and are being
maintained with patches.  At some point in the hopefully not too
distant future, there'll be a new Solaris release built from the
OpenSource code.  At that point, there'll likely need to be a snapshot
for patch generation, and work on release N+2 will commence.

As for Linux versus Solaris/OpenSolaris, call me provincial, but I
don't see how the latter is actually suffering.
