I don't think the divide between regular Solaris and OpenSolaris that you're suggesting in fact exists. As far as regular Solaris is concerned, the OpenSolaris sources just happen to be the next release under development. For those inside Sun, it's the same as it always has been in terms of transitioning from one release to another -- except that we've invited the rest of the world to look at and contribute to that source base. So, for today, Solaris 10 (and older) are closed source and are being maintained with patches. At some point in the hopefully not too distant future, there'll be a new Solaris release built from the OpenSource code. At that point, there'll likely need to be a snapshot for patch generation, and work on release N+2 will commence. As for Linux versus Solaris/OpenSolaris, call me provincial, but I don't see how the latter is actually suffering. -- James Carlson, Solaris Networking <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sun Microsystems / 1 Network Drive 71.232W Vox +1 781 442 2084 MS UBUR02-212 / Burlington MA 01803-2757 42.496N Fax +1 781 442 1677 _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
