While there's no reason one can't have multiple versions of a library
(with a single-part version number only incremented for ABI changes, please),
they aren't free even if disk space almost is.  They cost maintenance, and
memory too (if multiple versions are in use at the same time).  Sometimes
they're needed, and that's fine.  But they shouldn't be allowed to explode
all over the place.

As far as I can see, the SVR4 packaging mechanism knows enough about
dependencies to do its job.  Perhaps the package granularity needs to be
smaller (reducing the need for patches that only replace _part_ of packages,
which gets messy if you add packages later on), and something layered on
top like a slightly smarter version of pkg-get would get them up to speed.
