Solaris isn't "painful", but easy and elegant. It's a matter of opinion, and in particular, it's a matter of computer literacy. Just like one's chances of working at molecular biology job are slim with only a highschool diploma, or signing a deed without being able to read or write, so too must one be literate enough to use certain things.
