It wasn't a secret per se - Michal asked me to figure out some hosting for a long time back, and I never got around to getting it done. All the work was done on his own initiative, not necessarily a reflection of the existing desktop current group's goals ie. this is the stuff we should see a lot more of, people experimenting with ideas and writing up some code.
