Hey Rafael,

I find two weird things: first is that your user group, as none of the Brazilian UGs, is listed on the User Groups project at http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/osug-leaders/

Yes, it can be confusing. But we're cleaning it all up. :)

First, there is no Brazil UG listing on that page because, to my knowledge, there is no active Brazil UG that wants to be listed on that page. And I've been asking around for quite some time now.

There used to be a Brazil page (but no mail list), but it was abandoned and the leaders didn't respond to repeated queries to engage. Then there was another group that wanted to start up but didn't want to use any of the opensolaris.org infrastructure I offered. But I have never seen their external site and/or list and they, too, stopped responding after repeated attempts to engage. Then the third round with a Brazil UG was with Dimas and we had a page on the site pointing to his external page, but that was taken down at some point so I took down the page pointing to it. At that point, no one seemed to want a Brazil UG on opensolairs.org. Then I created the Portal Project last year, and there was a group interested in working on the Brazil Portal, and I have subsequently sent new people who came to me who were interested in participating (Rafael being the most recent) to the leaders. Cool. That's where we stand today. A portal is being worked on, there is no UG, and no UG has been requested.

Now, if there actually is a UG in Brazil that meets, etc, and has its own site and/or list, I would love to list that on the UG page and have their leaders on ug-discuss participating in the community. I can do that immediately. If there are people in Brazil who want to start a new group, we in the UG Community would love to engage with them and walk them through the process. I'm giving Sun a proposal to request some limited resources to help the user groups, so the timing is good. That conversation can take place -- and is taking place -- on ug-discuss. Sign up here: http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/ug-discuss Also, here is some background on starting UGs using opensolaris.org infrastructure: http://opensolaris.org/os/community/os_user_groups/ but I'll be updating that substantially as we reorganize that community.

There is no required overlap between the portals and the user groups. There can easily be a country portal project ongoing /and/ a user group in that very same country. Or many user groups, in fact. They need not be the same space on the site, too. However, in some cases, the people involved in both may know each other and may want to combine the efforts. Or maybe the portal makes reference to the user group as one of the pages within the portal. That's fine. This is basically what the Japanese community has done. In their case, we have a Japan Portal and a Japanese UG mail list. A few Sun employees run the portal, but the other 100 or so people in the UG don't really care to be involved in doing translations and really don't need their own web space. They just want to talk on list and meet, etc, so all they really need is a mail list. So, in the Japan case, I have them listed as a portal /and/ a user group since they are doing two things. They just share some tools, that's all. There will only really be a few of these overlap instances, so it's very easy to keep track of. Now, that Japan UG lives in Tokyo, but if there is a new group of Japanese developers in, say, Osaka, they'll likely want to have their own group mail list and web space since they'll be talking and meeting about stuff in Osaka. The Japan portal will likely list the Osaka group so there can potentially be an association. It's up to them. Then Japan will have one portal and two user groups. Nothing written in stone. We can look at each case individually.

The second one is none of the country Portals is listed in the OpenSolaris.org
At least not in an obvious/easy way to find. To be fair, the
http://br.opensolaris.org portal has a message stating it is currently hidden,
but http://fr.opensolaris.org and http://it.opensolaris.org don't have the
message and they are not listed anywhere!
Perhaps Jim Grisanzio knows how to fix this.

The Brazil Portal is not open yet. When it opens it will be listed in the projects page since all the portals are actually altered project spaces for now. They are not separate sites or pages with a given community or project. They are individual projects.

You can see the 4 open portals listed among the projects http://opensolaris.org/os/projects/, I list the portals -- open/closed -- in the Portal Project, http://opensolaris.org/os/project/portals/, and there are flags on the front page of the site. I know there are different opinions about the flags. Perhaps we'll have a drop down menu or whatever.

BTW, I am Brazilian from Recife and recently joined the Kernel Group in Menlo
Park,CA
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help

Cool. I'm sure the Brazil Portal team would love help.
