See for example http://blogs.sun.com/bonwick/entry/raid_z for a description of RAID-Z. It sounds pretty much like software RAID-5 with no write hole and decent performance (although some would say that on certain workloads, it's not so great on reads, but I'm not sure what the latest on that is). Also, there is now a double-parity version: http://blogs.sun.com/ahl/entry/double_parity_raid_z > * For cost reasons, I'd like to get a motherboard > with integrated graphics. Which integrated graphics > chipsets does OpenSolaris support? Any other hardware > compatibility issues I should watch out for? Check the HCL: http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/ Be sure you're looking at the S10 or SXDE version, as appropriate; the latter presumably has more devices supported. There may be something more up to date elsewhere, but I don't know what or where. > * Can I get Samba running on OpenSolaris? Yes, comes with it I think, else you can get it from blastwave.org. Might get interesting if you had lots of users, complex permissions, etc. But for home use, it would probably be fine. > Any suggestions, cautions, etc. are welcome. If you're in no great hurry, you might want to wait a bit; it looks like a more integrated CIFS (SMBFS) server and client (as opposed to Samba and GNOME desktop based pseudo-clients or hacky add-ons) are in the works, although I don't recall seeing any estimates of when they might be available.
