The reason you can't find it is because it's not there ;-) There's no such thing as debug 'mode'. If you want a DEBUG kernel then you have to install one (find out about bfu from the website) or if you want to debug specific things then you may find you can turn some helpful stuff on (e.g. you can set kmem_flags to help memory debugging even with a non-DEBUG kernel).
