Well ultimately one has to ask the opensource community whether they're
willing to accept the change 'globally' to address the problem. If all
the distros and opensource developers get on board with the change, the
transition might go alot smoother.

One might argue that if one is going to break compatibility, one might
as well fix the laundry list of problems with HAL currently - like when
putting in a device such as a mp3 player with a built in flash and
removable flash chip, it doesn't crash nautilus.
