old CDE for dtterm /usr/dt/app-defaults X11 programs i.e: XOrgCfg XvidtuneSUNWgnome-session /usr/X11/lib/X11/app-defaults Login manager for gdm /etc/X11 gnome keys and language settings are in: /etc/gconf gome apps /usr/gconf.xml.defaults/apps or /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults was the gconf dir where you looked for the preferences are stored?
