I have a Sony VGN-SZ4XWN/C laptop, which has integrated WiFi. The WiFi
basically works - I am sending this post via the WiFi. It uses the Intel
PRO/Wireless 3945ABG chip.

There is a switch on the front panel to turn the transmitter on/off. Trying to
boot with this in the off position is problematic at best, with it often
printing almost endless error messages on the scrren.

So I tend to keep the wireless on, even if on a train with no hope of using
WiFi. Then I get an irritating popup evey time the train passes a wireless
transmitter.

Looking at /var/adm/messages below one can deduce transmitter is off, then
surprise suprise it can't set the power.

Is there any special actions one should take to enable/disable the wireless on
a laptop? Just using the on/off switch on the top does not work too well for
me.
