I found this to be a odd problem and a lesson. Always check your messages when booting. The system was reporting a bad memory Dimm and offlining a bank of memory. This was causing the dtlogin not to complete and that is why the NVIDIA logo screen never went away. I re-seated the memory DIMM. It is happy now and the login screen is displayed in all of its glory. Now I have to figure out why the sound card is not working but thats for another post.
