As Alan mentioned, a number of folks have been looking into "ae".  One
issue that several folks identified (at least on the Indiana prototype)
is that "ae" seemed to lock up on bulk transfers while the "pcn" driver
did not:

I don't know if similar issues can be seen on SXDE if the ae driver is
substituted for pcn or not.  But it would be helpful if you could file
a bug on bugs.opensolaris.org noting the deficiencies you've seen with
pcn(7D) in any case.
