I suppose I should point out that Sun did, actually. Just not in the same combination. Sun invested a great deal in its secure NFS stack and in its directory server. It just didn't invest in a competitor to AD. There were many reasons, no doubt, and I wasn't here at the time, so I can't really bring clarity to the history.
