Alan C. and Che, you guys were right! It was a feature in System -> Preferences that some how got accidentally turned on. It's weird that I've never had this problem before in any other Linux or BSD distro using GNOME, but then again I'm a command line guy, so I'm pretty awkward when it comes to GUI stuff.
