I bet zfs complicates things, given that it will suck up quite a lot of memory
(although it's supposed to give some back if things get too tight).

Yet it doesn't appear to give back memory as needed.

My desktop machine has 8GB of RAM. a) For lotsa caching and b) because I can (and RAM was cheap). If the ZFS ARC grew huge, starting memory hungry applications usually caused the system to hit swap hard before ZFS started releasing memory. Starting a 2GB VirtualBox VM while the ZFS ARC hovers around 6GB+ inevitably makes the system swap and be all weird due to said swapping (minimized background applications start lagging, wallpaper redrawing out of swap, generally unresponsive interactivity, etc blablah). I limited the ARC to 4GB to get rid of all these issues.
