Setup:
2009.06 build 111
Athlon64 +3400 hardware.

Sorry to be such a whiner... but I'm in over my head and not really
understanding where to start.

No action possible or activity apparent with `pkg manager'.
No action possible or activity apparent with
`System/Administration/user and groups'

The user/group tool just stays greyedout and dead.

The package manager appears normal and the menu buttons work... but
the install/remove button never lites up when things are checked or
unchecked. Also it doesn't display any checked packages at
all... although I have a fullish compliment of things installed... some
670 pkgs.

I don't monkey around with my osol systems every day... long as the
server is supplying the nfs and cifs mounts... I leave it alone
mostly.. so not sure when this situation started or I might have a
better idea how it got this way.

There are times when I experiment with all the nifty stuff and stay at
it for days at a time... but not lately.

In an X session I'm unable to do any work with the user group tool or
the package manager.

I don't think its a permissions problem but to be sure I tried
starting an Xsession as root. All I get is the first grey screen and
the desktop never kicks in.

Ok, killed it off from ssh login. Then started X as my
user with pfexec [...].

I see no difference at all.
But I remember being able to work with those tools with no special
effort in the past on this very same setup, version etc,

So apparently something I've done in some fairly recent activities has
thrown a monkey wrench into the works. Trouble is I'm not thinking up
a nifty step by step approach to finding out whats wrong.

Anyone have a nifty outline of steps to take to start getting some
diagnostics going?

`pkg publisher' appears to show all the expected information:
