I am a newbie so please bear with me. In an effort to run Open Solaris, I just bought an HP Pavilion Elite with AMD Phenom X4 9750 Quad-Core Processor.
After going through the HCL I just found out it is not on the list.
So my question it Can I install open solaris on this box.
Tip and suggestions welcome.

Possibly. Many systems are not on the HCL but yet still work.

Your best bet may be to start with the device detection tool, which is a bootable CD from http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/hcts/device_detect.jsp.

This will tell you if Solaris thinks it has drivers for all of your hardware, requires external drivers (some network drivers including mine), or does not have a driver.

Then the next step is to try booting or installing the liveCD which will tell you if it works.

Personally, I ran the HCTS in the system I just built (after the steps above) as a safety check afterwards to make sure the system is really robust, not just working but flakey. And plan to submit my HCTS results. But most people don't need this and if the device detection tool says it's OK and then the live CD boots, you may be OK.

There's not really a page of "these systems are know to have problems", i.e. a form of anti-HCL, which means that lots of systems that are not listed will work, but it's not guaranteed.

Hugh.
