I'm going to copy this to 'discuss'.

The problem is solved. Or, almost solved. Last night, I happened to glance at
the permissions on /export/home and saw that the user I had created when
OpenSolaris was installing, had permissions of 700 on his $HOME. A user that I
created later on had 755. Under no circumstances had I manually altered
the permissions of the original user's $HOME.

On a hunch, I logged in as the second user (the one I created after the
install), and noticed immediately that there was no 'gconf-sanity-check' error
when the UI was starting. I left that user logged in all night, and hey
presto, when I opened the lid this morning, the machine (and Gnome) sprung into
life.

So I'm going to delete that original user, and add another one. Data loss
isn't a problem, as for the moment at least, my personal data on the laptop is
a mirror of what's on my desktop machine.

The problem is that the one I want to create, will have the same name as the
one I need to destroy. So that means creating an interim user with the power
to 'destroy' one and create another. I don't know OpenSolaris's 'roles' scheme
.. can someone tell me how to go about this?

Thanks.
