Hello All,

I'm doing some preliminary research on replacing our NetApp FAS2020 with a
ZFS based solution. The NetApp currently runs our VMWare ESX VMs via iSCSI.
The main reason we'd move to another solution revolves around cost; it's
expensive to expand this unit and even more expensive to add additional
features (Replication, NFS, etc). My questions relate around the available
features out there, either commercial or O/S for the ZFS solutions.

1. Is there any reliable clustering on the storage side? I'd prefer an
active/active setup, but active/passive would work well as well. There would
also need to be a fallback mechanism where the data would replicate back to
the primary node (or alternate node in active/active) once it came back
online. I'm looking for something other than ZFS send/receive as this is a
VMDK store and data changes quite frequently.

2. Is there any reliable WAN replication that also supports fallback?
This would have to be asynchronous as we don't have the bandwidth to do any
real-time replication, and perhaps the best solution is to use the ZFS
send/receive method, maybe on a more frequent basis.

I've looked briefly at some of the Nexenta Stor options, and perhaps that's
what I'm looking for. My overall thought at this point is to use one of the
HP DL185 G5 servers with 14 LFF bays populated with 12 SAS drives (VMDKs)
and 2 SATA drives (Normal windows mapped drives / file storage).

Thanks for any feedback you may be able to provide.

Thanks,

Ryan
