Recall that Sun previously sued Microsoft for making something that was "sort of Java". Java was all about avoiding vendor lock in, and Microsoft wanted that lock in and Google wasn't prepared to invest in preventing it. Both damaged Java.

As far as the commentary about not wanting develop in Java because of the fear of being sued by Oracle, that is just ludicrous. That is like saying that when Robert Kearns sued Ford and Chrysler for stealing the design of the intermittent windshield wiper, you would stop driving cars in case he might sue you too. In fact, at least that makes a small amount of sense, since in a patent case you could potentially go after the users of the car. But Oracle is not go after their own users, using Java licensed from Oracle. What possible grounds or motive could there be?
