I'd guess gentoo has too old and incomplete support for zfs: solaris zfs is steadily advancing and improving all the time. You can try going the hard and weird way, though, booting opensolaris livecd (or installing it) as a virtualbox client on your linux, and then using vbox's raw disk access feature to get to the data on zfs. Risky, tricky and full with cans of worms, I'd guess. Einar.
