I think that getting started manual for installing states that in case of
X server with GUI installation not showing on screen one can use
ssh -X and log to machine from another computer and do install.

Also , notice that it boots in text mode for you select language an
keyboard, etc
and after thta it continues in GUI mode.

Requested minimal amount of memory (RAM) for opensolaris 2009.06 is
512MB. just to do instalaltioan
but if some application is working on desktop it is 768MB as recommended
minimal amount.

Also check if you are using rather new Virtualbox version, I did not
have any problem in my Vurtualbox.
