i was able to resolve the problem, it was something i overlooked. the mirror was detached in order to complete activation of the new boot environment. the detached disk had an EFI disk label which was changed to Solaris2 but i failed to recreate the partition table. i assumed that the "zpool attach" operation would create the partition table. once i re-created the partition table on the disk i was able to re-attach it to the root disk in rpool. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org
