Wouldn't it be easier to just create snapshots and store them on the external 
backup disk? Of course if you have a corupted os then you'd have to format 
reinstall then restore the snapshot to get back to where you were. With the new 
release there is even a snapshot time slider program that will auto create 
snapshots on a timed interval.
