Hello,

I have been using Linux since the very first 2.4 releases, and I have also been
developing mainly C,C++,Java,Ada user and system applications on it, but I am
very new to OpenSolaris.

A few months ago I read this OS is in a transition to fully become open source,
so I decided to install, use, study the code and contribute to it (at least
starting from bug fixing).

Let's come back to my problem... I want to install OpenSolaris Developer
Edition b55 on a Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook. The only free disk space I can
reserve to it is a 10GB partition found within an extended one which partially
is occupied with a Gentoo GNU/Linux system.

Then I have two questions about it:

1) Are 10GB enough for OpenSolaris? Consider, please, that I want to use the
system only for learning basic administration tasks and for studying the system
tools and kernel codes. I don't need a big home directory, since the system
wouldn't be used for production.

2) This is the output of "fdisk -l /dev/sda":

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 12 96358+ de Dell Utility
/dev/sda2 * 13 1836 14651280 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 1837 9337 60251782+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda4 9338 9729 3148740 db CP/M / CTOS / ...
/dev/sda5 1837 1970 1076323+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 1971 3915 15623181 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 3916 8170 34178256 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 8171 9337 9373896 82 Linux swap / Solaris

Can I install OpenSolaris DE in /dev/sda8?

Please, consider that the 8171-9337 range is internal in a extended partition
/dev/sda3, where Linux occupies sda5 (swap), sda6 (root) and sda7 (home).

I am asking this latter question because I had to abort a previous installation
at the point where the procedure asked to confirm installation of OpenSolaris
in the extended partition /dev/sda4 treating that as a whole. I mean that I
understand it wanted to re-format the whole extended partition without
knowledge that it is partially occupied with Linux (as I described above).

I hope I have been able to explain the second issue, notwithstanding my poor
English. The question is: can I install OpenSolaris in /dev/sda8 without
destroying the Linux system in sda5, sda6 and sda7? If yes, how can I?

Thank very much to all of you who will reply.

Regards,

fabio
