Sowrrrry, there Lars. I just got confused between /sbin/init and my paranoia about anything perl ie. /usr/perl5/bin/perl /usr/lib/intrd.
anyway, thanks for the suggestions on migrating my data and workspaces to a new account. I feel like it s cop-out since all id did was try to use the stinkin gnome GUI. but there is only somuch patience and hopefully whatever eggshell I viciously stomped to cause this problem will stay out from underfoot inthe future. well on to fixing the sound, the firewire drive........
