Normally quite safe, but I recall something about hangs / lock-ups when
tracing something which is in the path to update the display.

This is probably due to breakpoints in the code causing a performance
overhead.  You may, in some cases, be able to avert the problem by diverting
the output to a file.

Which process did you truss, and what command-line options did you use? The
parent shell, or your x-windows session, or x-windows terminal program
maybe?  Did you try to kill the truss process before you rebooted the
system?
