I am testing OpenSolaris snv_93 in VMWare Fusion. I have a system
configured with two NICs and it's working fine. I need another
system, so I duplicated this one and changed the MAC addresses. Now
the system is bit for bit identical except that it has different MAC
addresses. It boots and both NICs come up and work fine. Then I
changed the IP addresses for both NICs and rebooted. Now both NICs
comes up and still work fine.

But then I changed the second system's identity (from indiana1 to
indiana3) and now only the first NIC starts UP automatically.

Here are the relevant files:
/etc/inet/hosts
129.98.90.45 indiana1 indiana1.aecom.yu.edu
129.98.90.46 indiana3 indiana3.aecom.yu.edu
129.98.90.48 indiana2 indiana2.aecom.yu.edu
192.168.1.27 indiana1local
192.168.1.29 indiana2local
192.168.1.28 indiana3local
-------------------------------
/etc/hostname.e1000g1
192.168.1.28
-------------------------------
relevant output of ifconfig -a
e1000g1: flags=201000842<BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,CoS> mtu 1500 index 3
        inet 192.168.1.28 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255
        ether 0:50:56:9:6b:e7
-------------------------------

The IP gets assigned, but it's not starting UP on its own as e1000g0,
which is 129.98.90.46, does.

e1000g1 does indeed start up if I type ifconfig e1000g1 up on the command line.
