I can start a failsafe xsession as root but not as a regular user. I get an
hourglass briefly then thrown back to the graphical login screen. I tried
adding /usr/dt/bin to my .bash_profile but this didn't solve the problem.

The reason I want a failsafe session is so that I can launch a non-gnome
xsession using a minimalist window manager like ratpoison or dwm. A better
solution might thus be to create a new type of session but I don't know how to
do this and the solution isn't obvious from the gdm documentation.

Thanks,
Jan Erik
