As for file system layout standardization, and as a FreeBSD user too, I
wrote something about this in the past:

As for third party software, I would say it will depend on the software
provider you will use (Blastware, Sun Freeware, etc.), and eventually
the distribution (SYSV versus IPS packages, for example).
