Geoffrey, This is not a glib response, as there has been some reportage on the news recently about ways that data can be restored after so-called "wiping". Data recovery technologies have come on in leaps and bounds, and data was shown to be partially recoverable even after a drive has been thrown from a 6th floor window.

The only surefire way to prevent your data from being compromised is to take a hammer drill to the drive. Replacement disks are comparatively cheap. Either that, or just keep it yourself in your own secure storage. Regards... Sean.
