perhaps try text-based boot, then enable ssh and tunnel an X session
over ssh from another machine - try running the installer from there?
you might have to use ctrl-alt-backspace to kill the X that is trying
to start and then log in quickly from the cli and enter 'svcadm
disable gdm'.

a hack, i know, but maybe worth a shot?
