I have no such problem. I created a file with mkfile, made it a loopback with lofiadm, created a UFS filesystem on it with newfs, and mounted it with no problem whatsoever. Could you please let us know more specifics about what problems you are having? OpenSolaris uses ZFS for boot and root - this should not be at all an encumbrance on your use of UFS filesystems.
