A bit difficult if you are buying components.
I tested OpenSolaris on my new laptop in the shop before I bought it.
One general piece of advice is:
Look at the Workstations SUN is selling ,
http://www.sun.com/desktop/workstation/ultra24/specs.xml
http://www.sun.com/desktop/workstation/ultra24/pdfs/ultra24_white_paper.pdf
This is a Quad Core CORE2 class processor with the INTEL X38
chipset.
Most motherboards with a simiilar build has a high likelihood of working
well.
AMD motherboards with Nforce 5xx ( MCP 55 ) chipset usually work
well.
Do not buy a motherboard with the Nvidia Nforce chipset COMBINED with
a SATA DVD. ( yet )
Buy a well known Ethernet controller such as Intel pro1000 ( e1000g )
or Nvidia Gigabit ( nge ) or Broadcom BCM5700 gigabit ( bge )
If the vendor does not state which ethernet chipset is used so that
you can
verify the existence of a supported driver , dont buy that board.
A huge number of Nvidia graphics cards run well.
The present Nevada build , biuld 89, is supposed to be the first with
support
for ATI radeon 3D graphics.
