I can't really comment on your hardware problems, but I can tell you how to
boot the 32 bit kernel.

When the grub menu presents itself, use the up and down arrows to select
the boot environment of your choice.  Then type e to edit this entry.

Use the down arrow to select the kerenel line and type e to edit this
line.  Remove $ISADIR/.  Hit return when you're done editing the line.

Use down arrow to select the module line and remove $ISADIR/ from this
line.

When your done editing, type b to boot the system.
