I doubt whether it's possible to adjust gnome menu (Preferences, Places, System) to Solaris-10 "all-in-one" like menu without recompiling Gnome-panel... Patch gnome-panel-08-launch-menu.diff changes menu handling significantly, menu handling logic is hard-coded...
