Is "130.111.32.11" really a DNS server, perhaps inside of the 
University of Maine?

Try this as a test:  Replace that IP address with "4.2.2.1" and see
if your lookups start working.

Also, check the "hosts" line in your /etc/nsswitch.conf to verify
that you're using DNS for host resolution.
