There is an ubuntu like system coming. It is called Project Indiana - http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/indiana/
It has a pkg command that allows you to install and update from an online repository. There is a Developers Preview 2 out that you can download and play with. See the above web site for download links. The Solaris Express Developers edition 01/08 uses the older packaging system like pkgadd and pkgrm. It is not as easy to keep up to date hence one of the reasons for Indiana.
