Hmm, bugs.opensolaris.org returns this:

Bug ID           6667565
Synopsis        panic in gcpu_mca_logout()
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6667565

And:

Bug ID           6661464
Synopsis cpu.generic panic during install of snv_83 on a i386,thor
system - occurs consistently
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6661464

Both are duplicates of:

Bug ID           6661485
Synopsis cpu module handle array indexing is borked in snv_82
http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6661485

6661485 is supposed to be fix in snv_83.
You said that b79 still does not install; does b86 crash, too?
