I also couldn't get my 23 inch lcd monitor to display correctly using opensolaris. When the monitor was connected to my laptop, the laptop wouldn't even boot! When running I could connect the monitor and using xrandr it would recognize it, but couldn't get the screen resolution right.
Doesn't matter though. I use opensolaris as a server, not a desktop which the 23 inch monitor and Mplayer would be used for.
