First, my opinion is worth as little as yours is. :-)

But since you asked, even if I agree with you on controversial
off-topic issues, they still don't really belong here.

Let's say evildoer company X invents (or buys) a new magic codec, and
using their near-monopoly gets it widely accepted. But in many
countries, there's no _legal_ way to use it without some of your money
going back to company X.

Your choices:
* break the law
* move somewhere where the law is different
* spend the money even if it offends you
* don't use company X's magic codec

Any of the above may have unpleasant consequences. You get to
choose for yourself which you dislike least.

In any event, please don't expect anyone else to help you break the
law in your country, or theirs either. You don't want to violate
your standards to obtain a solution, please don't ask anyone else
to violate theirs.  (golden rule)

See how that worked? I didn't even have to get into politics or
religion or environmentalism or the actual name of company X or what it
was they were doing that I didn't like.

As for the rest...many people are rude on line. Probably doesn't do
any good, but that's life. If you want the content, you deal with the
garbage that comes with it.

For me, in a technical forum I want technical Q&A & info, and would
prefer to discuss unrelated issues elsewhere. Doesn't mean one lives
a bunch of separate lives, just means one doesn't need to discuss it all
in inappropriate places.

As long as off-topic issues are excluded and people aren't frequently
rude, it's not for me to say someone isn't welcome, regardless of
how I might feel about whatever else I might know about their position
on off-topic issues.

(FWIW, most companies sooner or later support, directly or indirectly,
both some group or cause I strongly disagree with, and some group or
cause I strongly _agree_ with. Avoiding the first group is something
I'd personally reserve for only the worst of the worst, because otherwise
the number I'd have to avoid would get seriously impractical. You're
entitled to do otherwise of course, but the details of the causes you or I
agree or disagree with remain off-topic. I for one don't want to see
mentioned here even those I strongly agree with.)
