Hello, I would like to get OpenSolaris running on an e326m I picked up. (It
runs Debian just fine, but I plan to build a file server and want to use ZFS.)
I'm having problems getting the 2009.06 livecd to boot, however. When I start
it, no matter what option I pick in the Grub menu the system eventually hangs
at the copyright notice. (IE, blank screen, with SunOS Release 5.11 Version
snv_111b 64-bit... displayed.) I did try the 2008.11 livecd, though the GUI
wouldn't work properly - the screen would be garbled and the mouse wouldn't
work. I was able to boot it into the text console, but there doesn't seem to
be away to do an install from here (some Google searching seems to have
confirmed this).

I did find something online about Solaris switching to the serial console if it
can't pick up the graphics hardware properly, which I guess could explain the
2009.06 version seeming to hang. I don't have a serial cable handy, so I can't
verify this. To add to the problems this machine has Broadcom NICs in it,
which don't get picked up during the install (otherwise I'd just stick them on
my network and let them get a DHCP address, SSH in with X forwarding and run
the installer from another machine). I tried booting the 2008.11 livecd and
installing the Broadcom drivers, but the install failed (as reported after
running pkgadd), and though the cards were picked up they couldn't get an IP.

This machine is supposed to be supported according to the Solaris HCL, and I've
seen a few things on the forums about other people running it. What has
worked? Is there some Grub option you can use to keep it from redirecting to
the serial console?

Thanks for any info. I'm comfortable in a Unix environment; most of my
familiarity is with Linux/*BSD, and this is my first big project involving
Opensolaris, so I'm still getting a feel for things.
