If you've got the source, why the hell do you need a manual? Just kidding!

While the docs are incomplete and not up to date with the latest OpenSSL 
releases, there is an excellent starting point at
  http://www.columbia.edu/~ariel/ssleay/cryptosupp_index.html
I recommend that the OpenSSL page contain a link to this site.

For my project, I started with the docs, then read the source for 
specific details, like the handling of NULL pointers.
