i had no luck with irix-cc (i.e. 32 bits) either... Don! which
compiler(s) did you try? i tried MIPSpro 7.2.1.3m. anybody is going to
look into this? if not, i could probably do so next weekend... might
also check out asm/mips3.s if nobody feels like it...

^^ taking into consideration my last post on the matter
i'd really prefer to stick to SPARC v8plus till decision which way (see
the post) to go is taken.
