Occasionally one has to handle 2GB of data, and it's hardly possible
to know in advance which applications will be used on such amounts of
data ... On Solaris 2.6, where 64bit-files can be handled by extra
functions (open64 etc.), most (all?) free tools fail because they do
not know about those functions; and surely it does not make for a nice
API. Using 64 bits consistently would save many troubles; but if
there's a mixture anyway, of course you have to decide on a
case-by-case basis.
