I'm just a user of OpenSSL, and a novice at that, but I suspect the only requirement
is that you contribute code that solves a real problem, is correct, and fits in well
with
the existing code. You have to be able to do this without asking many questions,
so the skill level required is quite high.
Start by reading the OpenSSL sources and writing apps that use OpenSSL.
After a few months of that, you might bump into something that you want
to improve in OpenSSL. In other words, you probably have to be quite self-driven.
Nobody is going to assign you a task, so don't ask for one.
