That could be done but it would be none standard. The standard way involves quite a bit more work... The standard RFC3560 gives details of OAEP in CMS (as used in S/MIME v3). This specifies changes syntaxes for various parts of the ASN1 structures. OpenSSL currently doesn't support CMS, just PKCS#7. I hope to add CMS support one day if I can get enough interest in it.
